A Sewer Catastrophe Companion
"In 2012, Molly Danielsson, then Executive Director of Recode, and volunteer Mathew Lippincott, co-authored "A Sewer Catastrophe Companion – Dry Toilets for Wet Disasters." Published by the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA), this 24-page guide provides a DIY toilet system that empowers individuals and communities to respond independently in the event of a sewer infrastructure failure. Endorsed by the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management, the guide offers a practical solution that allows households, apartment buildings, and neighborhoods to plan ahead for emergencies without relying on timely or coordinated responses from authorities.
The system is centered around the use of widely accessible 5-gallon buckets and provides step-by-step instructions for creating dry toilets in disaster situations.
